The Bermudan Rig |
|
|
This is our best sail for racing. We improved the cut and
it proved very successful in OCSG races. We have found that a good
canoe hull with a SOLWAY DORY BERMUDAN rig will generally outsail
such dinghies as Mirrors and Toppers.
This rig has an excellent windward performance
and responds well to trimming. The sail is made of four ounce
polyester and has a luff sleeve.
|
|
The sail is reefed by rolling it round the mast.
 |
This is easily done while on the water and the sail may be
reefed or completely furled. It is important that any sailing
canoe should be able to adjust or get rid of it's sail while
afloat. |

 |
|
Because of its simplicity, this rig is also ideal for those who
are confused by a lot of string. There is no halyard and the sail
is reefed or furled very easily and quickly by rolling it round
the mast. It is the quickest rig to set up.
|
|
If your main interest is racing and you want to win then you
will want a Bermudan rig. It is also excellent for pottering and
has been used very successfully for long
distance cruising. |

BERMUDAN rig being sailed by an
American guest, Jim Bowman (nine times ACA champion) at the 1996
International Series on Lake Windermere, in which he gained two
first places out of six races. |
|
The SOLWAY DORY BERMUDAN rig is similar in many ways to those
used on Lasers and Toppers and books on how to sail these contain
many useful hints.

|

The high aspect BERMUDAN SAIL
is designed for racing. There is slightly less
stability than with our normal Bermudan rig but enhanced windward
performance.
It needs a higher, stiffer mast, which
unfortunately cannot be sent by our usual carrier.
This rig has shown itself to be competitive
with much more expensive and complex fully battened rigs. The
price will be the same as the normal Solway Dory Bermudan Rig.
Please note that our rig prices do not
include rudder or leeboard. The rig will not work without a
leeboard.
