Royalex versus Fibreglass

Royalex hulls are virtually indestructible but they do get chewed up easily and this slows them down. The fact that they are so durable encourages some people to treat them with less respect than is normally given to boats. For a boat to move easily through the water the bottom has to be smooth.

Fibreglass boats do not have the ultimate durability of Royalex boats but their hard shiny bottoms do not get as ragged in normal use. If you damage a fibreglass boat it can usually be repaired easily and economically and it is possible to bring up the finish as good as new.

Fibreglass is best for sailing and flat water paddling but for bouncing down rocky rivers Royalex is better.
