Outriggers

In the past we have had reservations about putting outriggers on boats which can be sailed without them. However many people seem to want them and as some outriggers we have seen have given cause for concern we have tried to address some of the problems.

Our outriggers are small and are normally carried high and clear of the water. This enables the canoe to behave normally unless heeled to excess when the leeward outrigger will usually prevent a capsize.

If, and this requires profound carelessness, the canoe does capsize, the outriggers are small enough to enable it to be righted easily and they also make it easier to get back in and keep it stable it while you bail.

Because the outriggers are not usually in the water they do not detract at all from the normal feel of the boat but you can, if you wish, sail a bit more aggressively without the fear of going in the water if you get it wrong. We believe that our small outriggers will enable many people to learn to sail well much more quickly.

Of course there is always the possibility that outriggers can mask worsening weather conditions and that they can give a false sense of security which leads the unwary canoeist into danger. Our outriggers are not supposed to be in the water most of the time. If they are in the water that means you are eating into your safety margin and should do something about it.

Although Solway Dory outriggers are designed to fit our sailing canoes they will fit many other boats. The outriggers are only as good as the attachment so you should make sure they are sufficiently well attached to your boat. We have reservations about clamping outrigger beams directly or indirectly to plastic gunwales. Unless the canoe has strongly attached wooden or aluminium gunwales we recommend that the outrigger beams should be secured by straps passing round the hull and that these should be checked frequently.
